Marcella & Reverend Thanatos 🕯️
A journey across academic performativity, spiritual rituals, self-help narratives, erotica and BDSM imagery & literature.
In this performance-workshop we explore perversion as methodology, bringing into conversation queer theories (perversion as a political tool) and psychoanalytic theories of perversion and unconscious desire. We problematise radical identitarianism by shifting the focus to unleashing individual inner contradictions and perverse fantasies.
The first part is an introductory lecture performance on perversion as methodology. The performers “re-read” relevant (or just irrelevant) texts and ask: is there friction between political identities and desire?
In the second part we invite participants to engage with these narratives:
We ask participants to use images or texts shown in the first part or their own. We then invite them to produce short image/texts. Each work produced is delivered as confession to Reverend Thanatos individually: the toilet booth is turned into a confession room is where our perverse desires will materialise.
Participants are encouraged to bring with them personal objects, texts or images to work with.
